During an era of reform in the United States, the American-Hawaiian Steamship Co. tried to discourage gambling by raising the freight rate on poker chips transported from New York to the West Coast by 50 cents.

It bumped the cost from $1.75 to $2.25 per 100 pounds (from about $42 to $54 in today’s values).
